For some reason, a lot of instructors ask you to focus your eyes on the back of the ball during the golf swing.

More important than the eyes, is the chin. In fact, fixating your eyes can be counterproductive – locking your chin into place – and preventing it from shifting. The chin has to point behind the ball. SOME people (Nicklaus is a good example) preset their chin prior to starting the backswing. Others (most pros) move it back as they initiate their shoulder turn.

Don’t take my word for it. One of the most prominent golf teachers of yore named Alex Morrison started an entire teaching method centered around this concept. He believed the ‘chin behind ball’ to be a pre-requisite for the golf swing.  Jack Grout , who taught Nicklaus to keep his chin behind the ball was a student of Alex Morrison.
